Awakening, brings the heart back to itself.
Art, makes one become one’s true self.
Awakening Art · Private Sharing Session

"For so many years, I've been pondering one question: What else is art good for?”——Maha Ruba

In mid-May, artist Maha Ruba invited Ulrich von Schroeder, a leading independent Swiss art historian and eminent figure in the study of international Himalayan art, to host an “Awakening Art · Private Sharing Session” at the China Nationalities Trade Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre in Beijing. The theme was “The Artist’s Self-Awakening and Awakening Others—Taking the Works and Life of the Tenth Karmapa Chöying Dorje as an Example.” This extraordinary artistic feast concluded successfully with a full house.

Other distinguished guests in attendance included: Luo Wenhua, researcher at the Palace Museum and director of the Institute of Tibetan Buddhist Cultural Relics; Dong Celi, director of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Working Committee of the China Association for the Promotion of International Trade; Qian Xingwei, Buddhist art consultant at China Guardian Auctions; Chen Wei, head of Buddhist art at Beijing Zhonghan Auctions; Gong Jian, expert member of the Appraisal Committee of the Tibet Collectors Association; and Li Yu’er, a renowned young singer from the China Opera and Dance Drama Theatre. This was an inward journey for the artists.

Maha Ruba said, “What is the awakening function of art? It is through art and artworks that we can see the completeness and perfection of our inner lives. In our lifetime, you may miss out on anything, but the one thing you cannot miss is your own perfect self, because you don’t even know how perfect you are, with what infinite possibilities and potential.”

Below is an edited version of Maha Ruba’s thematic sharing at the “Awakening Art · Private Sharing Session”: “Everyone Is an Awakening Artist”
